Eleven Town Tour ‘In the footsteps of Douwe’
Douwe is Egberts Douwes. He and his wife Akke Thijsses opened a store in colonial goods on the Midstraat in the South Frisian city Joure in the year 1753. They have laid the foundation of the current coffee- tea and tobacco concern Douwe Egberts.
Egbert and Akke sold products that belong to the ‘pleasures of daily life’. Till the First World War (1914-1918) a great variety of products were sold in the charming stores which can be visited during this tour. Coffee, tobacco and tea were the most important products. Other products that were sold were: candy, sugar, rice, vermicelli, blueing, chicory, cinnamon, saffron, syrup, vinegar, chocolate, “Goudse” pipes and tropical and subtropical fruits.
In order to get to know this famous Frisian – Douwe Egberts coffee and tea is consumed in the whole world - and to know the province Friesland, the tourism board Friesland Holland has developed the Eleven Towns Tour ‘in the footsteps of Douwe’. This is a tour full of history which starts and ends in the glorious and cosy Frisian village Joure, the place where Douwe Egberts still has his million dollar business.
Interesting variation
This all-in and full-service package has been favorably priced because of the mixture of accommodations of hotels and also guesthouses, the last mentioned which are a little bit cheaper but still very neat. All of them are well located, either in a cozy city centre or village centre or they are located on the country side. Not only the location and size but also the quality, kitchen and the atmosphere of the accommodations are all different, which makes the tour even more exciting. Anyhow, all accommodations are lovely and inspected by Friesland Holland itself. A generous three course menu will be served and a lovely bed will be offered in all accommodations. On top of this, your luggage will be transported each day by Friesland Holland so you can enjoy the “Lovely Friesland”.
Joure: Shop, feast and play
The Douwe Egberts city Joure has surprisingly a lot to offer: sights such as the famous DE-stores, a lot of museums, manufacture of the Frisian clock and barometer, a swimming resort, playground for kids, exceptional restaurants, cafés and events such as the famous balloon party. The Midstraat in Joure is the shopping street of South Friesland as has a lot of interesting establishments with restaurants, terraces and museums in between. Joure is not directly connected with the famous Eleven Towns Tour but is only 5 kilometers away. Joure’s accessibilty is perfect. Families with children love to stay here because of the swim resort “De stenen Flier” and because of the indoor kids attraction park “Speelbos Joure”. There is also a wellness resort in the neighborhood with facilities such as saunas. Furthermore there is also the opportunity to do watersports or to go out with a barge.
