Tour de Frise: enjoy cultural and culinary delights of a special kind of coastal people.

WOLVEGA (NL) – The bureau for tourism Friesland Holland offers as part of its programme a multi-day cycle tour – the Tour de Frise – along Friesland’s cultural-historical highlights. Where the Romans halted around Anno Domini – at the ‘Large Dutch rivers’ – you continue to explore the lowest and most picturesque section of the Netherlands.

In order not to run great risks, the Romans engaged in friendly and business relations with the Frisians who had the long-standing reputation of being proficient in international trade and shipping. These are just two of many themes on your journey through the 5,000-year-old cultural landscape.

Amaze yourself!
This package is a typical Friesland Experience all the way. The taker of this especially designed 10-day package will not only encounter UNESCO World Heritage Sites but also less known, hidden treasures of the province of Fryslân. You will cycle through typical Frisian landscapes, along lakes and the sea, through nostalgic small towns and villages with irresistible little shops.

You will get an impression of the history of knoll building, 3,000 BC, through to 20th-century peat extraction. Centuries-old monuments, among which are the smallest castles and churches of Europe, open their doors to you. The building of the famous skûtsjes, Friesland’s flat-bottomed ships, will be introduced to you, as well as dairy farming and the world renowned Frisian dairy products.

Frisian hospitality
Frisians cherish their identity as a nation of dynamic sailors and farmers and makers of world renowned handicraft and industrial products. They keep their own language, Fries (Frisian) alive, with among other things worthwhile traditions – also to visitors – such as village festivals and sailing contests with historical ships. Greeting each other is another good tradition of the Frisians, on the water as well as on the cycle paths. “You are a guest and you are welcome,” is what they mean to say, and “Enjoy all the beautiful things which we preserved for you and us!”

Frisian cuisine and regional products will be served in the restaurant of the hotels where you stay. The lodgings, which were especially selected for this package, contribute to your taking in every day to the fullest and enjoy yesterday’s ambiance as well as the delights of Friesland.
