The nicer places to stay

Experience the age-old trading, crafts, fishing and agriculture of Frisians and Hollanders, with the whole world!

The IJsselmeer [Lake IJssel] Route: 2000 years of astonishing wealth and poverty around the Zuiderzee

WORKUM (NL) – A highlight besides the world famous Elfstedenroute (Eleven cities ice skating route) (the bicycle, boating, car, motorbike and skating route along eleven exquisite historical cities in Friesland: www.elfstedenroute.nl), is the IJsselmeer Route. This new tourist route from the bureau voor toerisme Friesland Holland [Friesland Holland Tourist Office] is the ultimate encounter with the former large salty inland Zuiderzee and the current fresh water IJsselmeer.

Whoever likes lots of variety and wants to experience a Netherlands with and without dykes and would like to see the nautical and urban treasure of the Golden Age, then they should book the IJsselmeer Route package. You sleep in hotels on or at the water, including in the city palace of Vollenhove, or luxurious bed and breakfasts, this depending on the means of transport in which you travel the route. Perhaps even by foot!

The trip along the shores of the former Zuiderzee is an authentic discovering of the glorious past of the Frisian and Hollander shipmasters who sailed international waters, the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Wouda’ steam pumping station’ in Lemmer and the former island of Schokland with its dramatic history, historic and modern agriculture and fisheries, regional products, age-old and contemporary ceramics, splendid museums such as the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen (visit this when taking the ferry trip from Stavoren to Enkhuizen, and vice versa), rare art and the culture of rich port towns and quaint fishing villages in the provinces of Friesland, Overijssel, Noord-Holland (North Holland) and Flevoland. Many far-famed water management and civil engineering works are in the program, such as the Afsluitdijk (dam and causeway), the steam-driven pumping station of Lemmer (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the eco-lock of Stavoren.

Unprecedented possibilities and service
You can travel the IJsselmeer Route by bicycle, car, motorbike or motor coach or on foot, but also with a motor boat, sailing boat or, in small or large groups, with a traditional sailing ship of the Frisian fleet.

For cyclists and walkers, Friesland Holland Travel, the tour operator of the Friese Bureau voor Toerisme [Friesland Holland Tourist Office], will transport the baggage. It also provides a fast breakdown service, with a speedy replacement top-notch bicycle if your (rental) bike should unexpectedly break down or does not perform as it should (e-bike).

By whatever means you should set off, you will receive in advance, therefore at your home, a detailed information package covering all the places worth seeing and relevant particulars. In other words: the preparation of your trip is an already full experiencing of the joy of your upcoming holiday or coach trip. Because Friesland Holland is itself the route developer and package provider, it can tailor to your personal desires. For example, suppose that you find a certain day route from the standard package just too tiring or too long, we will then shorten it for you with an extra overnight stay.

The IJsselmeer Bicycle Route with distances, overnight stay locations and places worth seeing
Day 1: Arrival in Lemmer. Today you can alreayd discover the surrounding of Lemmer and visit for example the Ir. DF Woudagemaal, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the evening a three course meal will be waiting for you.

Day 2: After a good nights rest and bulky breakfast you will start your tour. From Lemmer you will go via the old Sea dike in the direction of Kuinre, a beautiful small old Zuiderzee city in the north of Overijssel. After this you will go onto Blankenham and Blokzijl. The last mentioned redirects to the reinforced sluice, the Blokzijl. 'Zijl' also means sluice. The museum ‘Kunst en Cultuur Museum het Gildenhuys’ is definitly a must see. The museum gives you an insight in the rich history of Blokzijl and its ancient relation with water. Eventually you will head to your destination for today, Vollenhove. The centre of Vollenhove is worth watching already, let alone the Oldruitenborgh park and the gardens of Marxveld. The harbour of Vollenhove is also recommended!

Day 3: Today you will discover the next UNESCO World Heritage site, Schokland. Schokland is a unique combination of culture-history and nature. Schokland is the symbol of the Dutch living with water. You can visit he museum, the visitor centre De Gesteentetuin, or you can just walk or cycle around. Via Schokland you move onto Urk where you will find a tangle of streets that still breath the ancient time. Nice to visit is the birthplace of Appie Baantjer, a famous writer, the museum Het Oude Raadhuis where amongst other things the traditional costumes, art and spice shop are shown. Another site recommended is a visit to the 18 metre high lighthouse. At the end of the day you will be back in Lemmer where you will dine and spend the night.

Day 4: After a bulky breakfast and a goodnight rest you will continue your tour from Lemmer to Workum. Along the way you can visit 'Tuin bij de Wildernis', a picking garden with special plants. You can find this garden in Sondel, a small village located 10 kilometres from Lemmer. In Oudemirdum one can find besides pavilion De Hege Gerzen, where you can rest and have a cup of coffee, visitor centre Mar and Klif, but in Oudemirdum there is also a playground for the children. For kids until the age of 13 there are over 40 attractions in the Sybrandy's Speelpark. In the south of Friesland, kiters are also able to breath as one can go kitesurfing at the village Mirns.
A little further one sees the next pearl, the village Laaxum who has a harbour which is over 100 years old and serves delicious fish. When one goes one you will reach the city Stavoren, one of the Eleven cities. Are you familiar with the story of 'De Vrouwe van Stavoren'? You can read all about her at the statue in the harbour of Stavoren. You will continue your trip to Hindeloopen where one can visit the Eerste Friese Schaatsmuseum (the first Frisian ice skating museum), its recommended! At the end of the day you will reach the city Workum where you will dine and spend the night.

Day 5: Workum is wellknown due to the famous Dutch artist and painter Jopie Huisman. In the Jopie Huisman museum they are able to tell you everything about the life and Jopie Huisman and you can see his work in person. You will move onto the Afsluitdijk. But before you reach the Afsluitdijk you will cross the village Piaam where one can find the nature-historical museum 't Fûgelhûs which is also accessible for disabled people. You will also cross the village Makkum along your way, the former port of the Zuiderzee. In Makkum one can find the Tichelaar eartenware of Makkum. In 1994 the 'Tichelaars Koninklijke Makkumer Aardewerk- en Tegelfabriek''existed for 400 years. Once you are at the Afsluitdijk it is recommended to visit the Kazematten museum at Kornwederzand. Due to the number of kilometres it is recommended to turn around once you are at Kornwederzand. You will go back via Witmarsum, Bolsward, Workum to Koudum. Centuries ago the city Bolsward was located at the Middle Sea, but it is also a so called 'Hanzestad'. The city has a wonderful city hall and many monuments and other attractions. From Bolsward one goes onto Workum and eventually ends up in Koudum where a bed is spread and a three course dinner awaits.

Day 6: In the morning, after breakfast, you will leave Koudum and head to Stavoren where you will cross by ferry to head to Enkhuizen. The boat moors in front of the Zuiderzee museum which you can visit. The first boat leaving Stavoren goes at *10.10 (timetables can change, see: www.veerboot.info) and takes around 1 hour and 25 minutes. Enkhuizen, Amsterdam and Utrecht are the only cities in the world with more than one Hemony-carillon. One ca find these in the Zuidertoren or the Sint Pancrastoren and the Drommedaris, in here there are two 17th century carillons which have been made by the brothers Hemony. At the end of the day you will take the ferry back to Stavoren *(16.30 o 'clock) and you will head back too Koudum.

*The timetable is based on high season.

Day 7: Today is already the last day of your package. You will go via Rijs, Balk and Wijckel back to Lemmer where you started your tour. Rijs, a village located in the woods of Gaasterland breaths rest and space, but in the high season the village is overloaded with tourist due to its beautiful location and surrounding. Balk, located at the Slotermeer is the ideal place for people who love watersport, but one also finds 33 monuments in Balk and houses with exceptional facades. The village Wijckel on the other hand is often named with Menno Baron van Coehoorn. His noble retreat Meerenstein was located in Wijckel. Unfortunately the only things that are still there are the garden and the beautiful drive way. In the 'Vaste Burchtkerk' one can find the grave of Menno Baron van Coehoorn, the church is open regularly in the summer.

Did you see everything already? If not you can stay another night in case you booked it beforehand so you can enjoy your tour a little longer.
