Three Provinces & Peat Tour

The 7-day Three Provinces & Peat Tour is one of the most fascinating cycling tours in The Netherlands. You will not only encounter typical Dutch landscapes and cultures of modern times, but also starkly contrasting ones from yesteryear.

The central feature is water. Water used as a defence against enemies; water that must be held back to stop you from going under; water that must be forced out in favour of polder land in order to feed the Dutch and offer them living space; water for transport, agriculture, horticulture, as well as recreation. And last but not least, water to drink. The Netherlands depend on water more than any other European country.

With leaps and bounds you travel through the history of the North-Netherlands’ wetlands: from the last ice age to the turbulent Middle Ages, from the Golden Age (17th century) to the 20th and 21st centuries. You’ll cycle through marshy nature areas as well as peatlands, over dykes and fertile former seabeds, past old windmills and ultramodern wind turbines. You visit old fishing villages and islands which are no longer islands due to the surrounding areas which have been reclaimed from the sea. One by one, they are treasured remnants from a time that the sea was largely in charge.

Cultural landscapes
During the bike tour you will encounter the following landscapes and historical places: 1) The indigenous brook valley of De Lende, on which peat extraction left its mark; 2) The medieval coastline of the former Zuiderzee (the sconce of Slijkenburg, the fortress and fishing culture of Kuinre); 3) The reclaimed Noordoostpolder (1942) with the former islands of Schokland and Urk (in terms of natural history and culture exceptionally fascinating); 4) The old port and fishing village of Lemmer (the entry point of Friesland with sluices, and the large pumping station as highlights), and the hinterland, the large Tjeukemeer and the widespread valley of the ancient stream De Tsjonger.

The start and finish of the tour is a hotel in Wolvega in the heart of the south Frisian park and waterland. Wolvega is easily accessible by car (A32), train and bus. You could take on this route with your own bicycle or rent a fine-looking touring bike with all the bells and whistles from Friesland Holland. Renting an electric bicycle with pedal assistance is also an option.

From the moment you embark on your bike tour in Wolvega, you won’t have a worry in the world. Not only does Friesland Holland take care of all your luggage transport from hotel to hotel, but in the case of bike trouble Friesland Holland also provides a breakdown service! On an interesting note, Friesland Holland’s Top Bikes are equipped with puncture-resistant tires!

Daily programm

Day 1

The municipality of Weststellingwerf, of which Wolvega is the capital, features a wealth of impressive cycling routes. If you manage to arrive reasonably early on day 1 you’ll be able to enjoy the peaceful, charming area east of Wolvega.
You’ll dine and stay the night in Hotel Holland Inn.

Day 2

The next day you will cycle away from Wolvega unencumbered by your luggage (transported by Friesland Holland) towards your lodging address in Emmeloord, the capital of the Noordoostpolder. On this route you will have an opportunity to explore the tropical gardens and orchid culture of De Orchideeënhoeve in Luttelgeest. If you happen to be cycling anywhere between mid-April and mid-May, you will also derive much enjoyment from the tulip fields. The Noordoostpolder is the biggest tulip ‘country’ in the world. You’ll dine and stay the night in Hotel van der Valk in Emmeloord.

Day 3

After leaving Emmeloord and a visit to the intriguing former island of Schokland – World Heritage Site – you’ll cycle to another former island, namely Urk. This renowned fishing village was fortunate enough to be left with one of its sides bordering the open water of the IJsselmeer (formerly Zuiderzee). It is because of this that yesteryear’s ambiance can still be found here, and watersports found a place along the numerous activities necessary for catching and processing fish. From Urk the tour continues via the dyke of the IJsselmeer (fantastic views) to the old fishing village and watersport centre of Lemmer, your third lodging location. Here you will learn about the many forms of traditional and modern sailing as well as water management. The three sluices as well as the oldest and largest (still) operational pumping station in Europe are likely to claim your attention for a considerable amount of time. Especially the ‘locking’ (letting in and out) of dozens of yachts every day at the monumental Lemster Sluice of 1888 is a sight to behold. You’ll dine and stay the night in Sporthotel Iselmar in Lemmer.

Day 4

On day 4 you’ll cycle back to Wolvega via the shore of the Tjeukemeer, watersport village Echtenerbrug, Rotstergaast (cycle ferry crossing the Tjonger) and Weststellingwerf’s pastoral landscapes. Also this day is full of cycling and numerous interesting discoveries. Dinner and overnight stay in hotel Holland Inn.

Day 5

After breakfast you'll cycle to Appelscha. Enjoy the beautiful Frisian Woods while cycling the peat tour.
Dinner and overnight stay in hotel 't Klaverblad.

Day 6

Today you'll cycle from Appelscha to your next hotel in Zwartsluis. On your way to hotel Zwartsluis, you will pass the city Steenwijk and Holland's little Venice named 'Giethoorn'. Take a moment of rest at one of the cosy terraces located at the water in Giethoorn, or visit one of the galleries.

Day 7

On your last day you'll cycle back to your starting hotel in Wolvega.
Again, Friesland Holland picks up your luggage at the hotel in Zwartsluis and will take it to hotel Holland Inn in Wolvega for you.
End of package.

You will stay in comfortable rooms. The sanitary facilities are located in the room.
