2+2 for you
The bureau for tourism Friesland Holland has launched a new holiday formula: 2+2 for you! It concerns 5-day Discovery Holidays which offer easily affordable cycling and boating holidays full of variety.
The holidaymaker will stay for four nights (2+2) in two different hotels, hostels or luxury Bed & Breakfasts. The suitcases will be transported by the Travel Service of Friesland Holland. In case of a breakdown, the Friesland Holland Assistance will immediately take action so that within 90 minutes you can be on your way again. The luggage service and the assurance to continue one’s trip are included in the price.
It’s an experience
The accommodations where you stay the night have been selected based on their appeal. They are located centrally in one of the holiday regions of Friesland or other areas of the province where there is much to be experienced. The taker of a 2+2-holiday will stay two consecutive nights in one place and the next two in a different location. From these accommodations the attractive regions around the hotel, hostel or Bed & Breakfast are explored by following routes in loops not unlike the shape of a clover leaf. The individual sections of the routes are not repeated and therefore provide plenty of variety!
After the second night, on day 3, one cycles to the next accommodation by following a route through a charming region with many attractions. The holidaymaker is free from any worries regarding the luggage as the Friesland Holland Travel Service will transport this to the next accommodation. After two nights in the second location the traveller will journey back to the location of the first accommodation, the start address where, if applicable, the car can be collected.
Programme
Hotel 't Klaverblad in Appelscha is a good starting point for undertaking trips in the Northern Netherlands. The charming, family-owned hotel is situated in a tranquil area where you are cordially welcomed and guaranteed of a good service. The hotel is located on the border of the ‘Drents Friese Wold,’ a national park with the second largest uninterrupted wood and heathland area of the Netherlands. Jointly, forest pools, heathland and sand drifts make up for a rich and varying landscape. The well-kept cycling paths, 63 kilometres in total, will lead you to the most beautiful spots.
On day three you’ll be cycling from Appelscha to Hotel Holland Inn in Wolvega. From Wolvega you can visit the areas of Lendevallei and Rottige Meenthe which are maintained by It Fryske Gea. The landscape of the Lende brook valley provides a lot of diversity: marshy areas, alder swamps, heathland, peatland ditches and windbreaks. All in all, a true feast for the eyes.
De Rottige Meenthe is a lowland heath of 800 hectares bordered by the Tjonge and Linde streams (thus connected with the Lendevallei). The area reaches through to the Weerribben in Overijssel and the peatland pools near Giethoorn. Rottige Meenthe is transected by the Scheene stream. Many crushed shell paths can now be found in the north above route N351 where people can cycle and walk to their heart’s delight while discovering the area.
Around the 19th century, peat in the Rottige Meenthe was harvested and transported to the west of the country. Therefore the landscape consists of peatland ditches and reedbeds. A number of peatland ditches which were not kept open have silted up or are silting up now, resulting in a gradual presence of water plants, shrubs, alders and birches. It’s a perfect breeding area for waterbirds.
In this area a number of sluices still regulate the water level. It is of special interest that the surrounding fields are lying lower due to more peat having been harvested there. In spite of it being a lowland heath the area is nonetheless losing water. Whether walking or cycling the Scheene Path, you will be able to see this. At times, the Scheene stream lies on a higher level than the surrounding land.
Fun Fact: The name Rottige Meenthe means the following: Meenthe stands for ’uncultivated lands’ or ‘communal lands.’ The word ‘rot’ can mean ‘land of low return.’ Peat or swamp land is also called ‘rotte.’ People from the area probably turned this into ‘rottige,’ as happened more often with words in that region.
On the last day, day five of the package, you will cycle back from Wolvega to Appelscha, where you collect your car. Remember to book a room beforehand if you don’t plan to drive back home that day.
